CAD benefits from many incarnations of Deaf education and from current research. Beginning in the 1980s, the Bilingual/Bicultural (Bi/Bi) approach has gained popularity. This approach, which CAD employs in addition to newer research practices, acknowledges American Sign Language as the natural, native and fully accessible language for children who have limited auditory input. It focuses on building a strong visual first language, ASL, and adds English as a second language primarily in print. Bi/Bi also seeks to honor Deaf Culture and provide role models and opportunities for children to experience all cultures. The Bi/Bi approach is proving to be effective for children of every hearing status and is particularly relevant as more children are using cochlear implants and other amplification devices.

The staff at CAD regularly read and investigate the latest studies from research centers such as those at Gallaudet University and the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT)’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf.
